What are the functions of the excretory system?
Excretory systems maintain the right concentrations of water, salts, and nutrients while eliminating metabolic wastes to regulate the chemical composition of bodily fluids.
Protein metabolism produces waste products that contain nitrogen. Before amino acids are converted to energy, amino groups are removed. Ammonia is created when the amino group (NH2) interacts with a proton-containing hydrogen ion (NH3). Urea, a substance the body can tolerate at higher amounts than ammonia, is created when ammonia is transformed into urea. Urea is then excreted out.
The excretory system is in charge of controlling the water balance in various bodily fluids. This is known as osmoregulation.
